1UP Foundation was founded in 2026 by Alex Dang after years of working alongside Child Life Specialists as a Gaming Technology Specialist.

Since entering the field in 2022, Alex has used video games and interactive technology to support children during hospital stays. For children experiencing long or recurring admissions, gaming can offer more than entertainment. It can provide an outlet for connection, emotional expression, coping, and a sense of familiarity within an unfamiliar medical environment.

Through this work, Alex saw how meaningful it could be for a child to have someone enter the room not to perform a procedure, but to offer a choice, share an activity, and create space for play. He also recognized that the need for these experiences does not always end when a child leaves the hospital.

1UP Foundation was created to expand that support. Through gaming programs, inclusive events, 3D printing, and accessible technology, the organization seeks to help more children and families experience connection, creativity, and joy throughout their medical journeys.

1UP Foundation is at the beginning of its journey. With support from volunteers, healthcare professionals, community organizations, donors, and gaming and technology partners, we can build programs that help children and families play, connect, and level up together.
